Eastern equine encephalitis and West Nile virus have been confirmed in a 3-year-old mare in St. James Parish, La., on July 12, says Mike Strain, D.V.M. and Louisiana Ag and Forestry commissioner.

The horse was euthanized after the confirmation, Strain says.

"Eastern equine encephalitis and West Nile virus are very preventable diseases," Strains says. "Owners should keep their equine vaccinations up to date and consult a veterinarian."

He encourages vaccination of horses.

These maladies affect the brain and symptoms include depression, lack of coordination, facial twitching, and other neurologic anomalies.

Horse owners who notice these symptoms in their animals should contact their veterinarian and the state ag department.
