Middleborough, Massachusetts horse dies of EEE
Speaking Equine Note:
Eastern Equine Encephalitis along with other diseases are transmitted by the bite of a mosquito. EEE symptoms can begin 4-10 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. The disease can then progress into disorientation, seizures, and coma. There is no treatment specifically for an EEE [virus] infection.
Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Western Equine Encephalitis, along with West Nile Virus and Dengue Fever, are spread by mosquitoes.
Protecting your pets can save their life. It is especially important to protect your horses.
Horses can be protected by vaccinations. It takes at least 2 weeks for
horses to develop immunity. Contact us if you have questions or would like to schedule an appointment to have your horse vaccinated.
Equine encephalitis, West Nile Virus and Dengue Fever cannot be passed from horses to humans or
humans to horses.
Since the mosquito is responsible for spreading the
disease. Controlling mosquitoes and their breeding places is critical to stopping the
mosquitoes. Be sure and drain standing pools of water. Even tiny bits of standing water can be sufficient to provide mosquitoes a place to breed.
